Importance of Workplace Safety and Health Law

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is an agency of the United Sates Department of Labor which sets and enforces protective workplace safety and health standards. Under federal law, workers may file a complaint to have OSHA inspect their workplace if they believe that their employer is not following OSHA standards or that there are serious hazards in the workplace. Individuals who make such complaints are protected against retaliation, and OSHA’s Whistleblower Protection Program enforces the whistleblower provisions of more than twenty whistleblower statutes protecting employees. OSHA sends Compliance Safety and Health Officers to work sites, where they carry out inspections and may assess fines for regulatory violations.
