Brooks joined Hull Barrett, PC in 2011 and is a partner in the firm’s litigation department. His practice focuses on general civil litigation, handling a wide variety of complex legal matters. He concentrates primarily on commercial litigation, including the prosecution and defense of complex business disputes, healthcare litigation, First Amendment matters, class actions, and criminal litigation.
Prior to joining Hull Barrett, Brooks served as an Assistant District Attorney, where he prosecuted cases on behalf of the State of Georgia and was appointed Special Drug Prosecutor. He also worked in the Public Defender’s Office for the Augusta Judicial Circuit, representing defendants in numerous misdemeanor and felony proceedings.
With more than a decade of experience in criminal law, Brooks has represented both the State of Georgia and private clients in a broad range of criminal matters. During his five years as an Assistant District Attorney, he prosecuted numerous felony and misdemeanor offenses. As a Public Defender, he represented indigent clients facing a variety of criminal charges. In private practice, he has spent more than four years defending individuals in cases ranging from misdemeanor DUI offenses to serious felony matters, including drug offenses, firearms charges, theft crimes, forgery, and other white-collar offenses.
His experience in white-collar criminal matters includes both prosecution and defense involving allegations of computer fraud, credit card fraud, embezzlement, bribery, larceny, racketeering, forgery, and identity theft. His representation has resulted in favorable outcomes for clients, including dismissals and probated sentences.
Brooks has also served as a prosecutor for Columbia County Magistrate Court, handling ordinance violations involving environmental issues, zoning disputes, alcohol-related offenses, and building code violations. He has managed criminal appeals, assisted clients with record expungements, and advised individuals on matters involving firearm carry permits. In addition, he has represented victims of domestic abuse seeking protective orders and healthcare professionals in Georgia and South Carolina facing professional licensing and criminal matters.
His civil litigation experience includes successfully prosecuting a local builder on behalf of Columbia County for environmental violations, defending newspapers in defamation and libel actions, and advising media organizations throughout Georgia on First Amendment and media law issues. He successfully resolved an open records dispute on behalf of a newspaper, resulting in a favorable ruling from the Georgia Supreme Court. Brooks has also obtained judgments against contractors for defective construction work, defended a large trucking company in a motor vehicle accident case, secured substantial monetary recoveries for plaintiffs, and represented businesses of all sizes in matters ranging from contract disputes to collections.
